When our actions need to be like Jesus, we can ask the Holy Spirit to help us be Christ-like. The Holy Spirit, however, helps us make decisions when we need to display the fruit of the Spirit. Sometimes we have to make choices on our own. When you become a child of God, God sends you the Holy Spirit which serves as a personal guide for you, but He does not prevent you from committing sins. Not all decisions or choices we have to make are ones that need us to ask the Holy Spirit for guidance. How can I tell the difference between my own impulses and a prompting from the Holy Spirit in times when you have to act or decide immediately? The Holy Spirit helps us navigate life’s obstacles by life by becoming one of God’s children.

Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groaning’s which cannot be uttered. Romans 8:26-27 - likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. This verse implies that the Holy Spirit will work primarily through the scripture that you know. John 14:26 says But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. When you first start becoming sensitive to the direction of the Holy Spirit, typically you become aware of the restraint of the Holy Spirit as He says no before you make a mistake. Also, it will be consistent with God’s character. When the Holy Spirit speaks to you, it will always be consistent with scripture. The Holy Spirit will testify of Jesus, will testify of truth, will war against your carnal nature, will convict of sin, and will dethrone self these are all according to Scripture. But somebody who is “drunk in the Spirit” is controlled and consumed by the Spirit, who helps us live holy lives. Somebody who is drunk with wine or alcohol is controlled by and consumed by alcohol. In the Bible, God contrasts being filled with the Spirit with being drunk.
